Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is a non-profit making organisation working within the UK. SAS set up in 1990 because Cornish surfers were sick of getting sick from using the sea. SAS peaked at over 10,000 members in the mid 90’s and is currently seeing membership growing again with currently over 7,000 members.
SAS is not just surfers and not just sewage anymore! SAS campaigns for clean waters for all recreational water users! SAS have over 20 live campaigns running simultaneously, covering the campaign topics; Sewage and Sickness, Safer Shipping, No To Toxics, Marine Litter and the Climate Chaos. SAS is also heavily involved in education, with 2 free online animated free recourses available on our website. All our campaigns highlight sustainable, achievable solutions.SAS have been described as:
- “Britain’s coolest environmental pressure group” The Independent.
- “Some of the Governments most sophisticated environmental critics” BBC news and current affairs.
- “The UK’s best environmental campaigners, focused on improving bathing water quality for all users” The Daily Telegraph.
- “Humour, knowledge, solutions and experience drives SAS. They are an inspiration to us all, right around the world” Tom Carroll, ex 2 x World Surfing Champion
However, as we look to the future SAS has more polluters than ever to deal with and more water users to protect. We will carry on with our unique hard-hitting and humorous campaigning style that has served us so successfully in the past. As always SAS campaigns will be based on science, promoting sustainable, achievable solutions. SAS will continue to campaign from the grass roots upwards to the top of the political debate ensuring that the water users voice is heard echoing down the corridors of power.
